Multi-family building in Sompolno — layout and tolerances
A four-storey building with 31 flats on ulica Ogrodowa in Sompolno, with the same layout on every floor. For precast that is simultaneously the best case and the most demanding one.
The best, because the same unit returns at every level and production runs as a series. The most demanding, because a geometric error repeats as well — and accumulates.

Scope of work
In traditional construction, deviations spread out gently. A wall built a few millimetres out per storey gives a centimetre or so by the fourth, but the bricklayer corrects it as he goes through the thickness of the joint. Nobody measures it, because there is nothing to measure — the structure is made of small pieces that adjust themselves.
A precast unit has no such freedom. It leaves the mould with a manufacturing tolerance, not a construction one, and it either fits its place or it does not. This shows most sharply at the staircase: the landing has to meet two flights bearing on walls that were set earlier. If those walls stand outside tolerance the landing will not go in — and it cannot be corrected through joint thickness, because there is no joint.
That is why erection begins with surveying rather than with the first unit. Bearing levels, the level of the ground slab and the structural grid are checked before delivery, not after it. It is a requirement traditional construction does not impose — and at the same time the reason the finished structure is more accurate.
